This summer, North Carolina's House and Senate will be working to finalize our biennial budget on June 30th, beginning July 1st, 2025 and covering the next two fiscal years. Inside this budget is the fate of what's known as an Innovative Pilot Program across three regions, including Western North Carolina: the Healthy Opportunities Pilot, a program that uses Medicaid funding to address some upstream health issues like food access, transportation, housing, and interpersonal violence. By addressing these root issues, the program hopes to both improve health outcomes for North Carolinians, saving them and the state money. In this short series of the Western North Carolina Health Policy Initiative podcast, we'll be taking a look at this pilot program from a few perspectives to help educate our listeners and policymakers about what's on the table. Today we'll look at an evaluation of HOP to better understand how the program is working and its impact on the state's bottom line.

New Report Recommends 30 Strategies to Support Healthy Aging in North Carolina
North Carolina’s population is rapidly aging. By 2028, 1 in 5 residents will be over age 65, and by 2038 most North Carolina counties will have more residents aged 60+ than those under age 18. This signifies major changes in the health care needs of our state for which families, communities, medical providers, and policymakers must prepare.
A new report, A Place to Thrive: Creating Opportunities to Age Well in North Carolina, from the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s Task Force on Healthy Aging recommends 30 actionable strategies for improving social connections, falls prevention, food and nutrition security, and mobility to support healthy aging for all North Carolinians.

School Meals for ALL NC - WNC Health Policy Podcast Ep. 2
A lack of reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food can have significant impacts on health and wellbeing. And this is especially true when it comes to children who need a steady intake of nutritious food to grow healthy bodies and develop healthy minds.
In North Carolina, however, one in six children are food insecure, and over 1.6 million North Carolinians live in a food desert - areas where healthy foods are not accessible. And since 2012, the number of food deserts in NC has only increased.
In this installment of the HPI Podcast, we speak with Marianne Weant and Alecia Sanders of the NCAH about food insecurity, the School Meals for All Campaign, and what we learned from implementing a similar program in NC during COVID, along with the political challenges and both state and local considerations for a more permanent implementation of this program.
